Video Launch Press Release

Monday, July 25th, 2005

On the surface, the Itchyworms have always been a bunch of jovial and funny guys. Their distinct sense of humor is quite known, if not legendary among their friends and peers who have known them from their college days in the Ateneo.

But as musicians, the foursome are deadly serious. The band came out at a time when furious and tuneless rap-metal was on the verge of breaking into local rock radio. In the midst of all the cacophonous aggression, the Itchyworms wrote and performed catchy music with actual melodies. But these weren’t mere pop songs; the band’s arrangements displayed a certain depth and complexity that would make the most fickle musician take notice. I remember when they first performed “Mellow Carousel” and “Chocophotoland” sometime in ’99; I thought, wow, these guys are good.

A debut album, Little Monsters Under Your Bed, soon appeared the following year, earning them the Best New Artist accolade at that year’s NU107 Rock Awards. But they probably deserved more than that. Little Monsters was a fine work that showcased the ‘

Worms

’ foremost strengths: smart songwriting, musical inventiveness, and apparent technical ability. But the album didn’t quite take off for reasons we will never comprehend, despite the strength of its singles “Happy Birthday,” “Antipara,” and “Bituin.”

Nevertheless, the band left their label and soldiered on, releasing the soon-to-be-a-classic “Buwan” as an independent single, along with an excellent video directed by Marie Jamora. As transcendent as “Buwan” was (and still is), it revealed an emerging depth and maturity in their songwriting, and foretold the brilliance of the subsequent new songs that the band would unleash during their gigs, including “One Ball,” “Contestant #1,” “Salapi,” and the consistent favorite “Beer.”

It’s 2005, and the Itchyworms have just finished recording their upcoming album, Noontime Show. None of us (except the band, their producers, their new label, Universal Records, and perhaps a few close friends) have heard it in its entirety, but from what we’ve seen and heard from them over the past year, we know it’s going to be an ambitious record, light years beyond Little Monsters. But the ‘Worms have not gone Pink Floyd on us; the music remains accessible, and in some cases, the poppiest they have ever done. Like the song for the video that the band are launching tonight.

“Akin Ka Na Lang” is the first single from Noontime Show, and is as infectious as the flu in July. The song’s melody and vocal harmonies are spot on, and its charming and witty lyrics, sung from the point of view of a jealous guy, are universally affecting without being crude. This is Perfect Pop as we know it, and as it should be.

The video was directed by Wincy Ong (of the band Narda), also a friend and a fan of the band, with Jamora as the director of photography. Besides the band, it also stars Ong’s bandmate Katwo Librando, the band’s engineer Shinji Tanaka (of Sound Creation Studios, where Noontime Show was recorded), and a cameo by a Soxy Topacio look-alike. Like the band members themselves, the video is hilarious, and like their music, very well-executed. And that’s precisely why we love the Itchyworms; they’re good and they know it, but they wholeheartedly make the effort to share their art with us, making sure that we “get” it.

Texter #1: San n u? D2 na me!  ;-D

Texter #2: Sorz, la me WhEelz 2day. Giv k sNa i2ng fÜd sa u. CnaBi kse ni daDi k ka n. Cge, ingatz! (",)

Texter #1: k

My God, these texters will not only put to shame the English and Filipino languages, but they will also destroy the vernacular.

Please, make a conscious effort to spell the words correctly.

Wala daw kasing nanonood. Nanood kami kahapon ni CD sa galle… Siguro mga 15 to 20 people lang and nasa loob.

At super daming taong nanood!!! Nakaka-overwhelm. P100 each.

Lahat ng movies na nag-work siya, may napanalunan (except Sarong Banggi, which in my opinion should have won best Sound Production/Soundtrack and/or Best Actress). Speaking of winners, Mansyon won best Short Film; Big Time won Best Sound and Best Screenplay; Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros won Best PD, Jury’s Citation for Nathan Lopez’s Performance (as Maxi) and Jury’s Film Selection. Not bad, huh?

Malamang daw (cross your fingers and knock on wood), ipapa-distribute ng top three films yung movies nila sa isang MAJOR distributor… Magaganda kasi. Lalung-lalo na yung Big Time tsaka Maxi.

We can go on and on…

May moments siyang maganda, pero most of the time, flat. Kasi, ang pinag-usapan nila, Brocka vs. Bernal… sa totoo lang, call me an ignoramus, but i don’t think anybody gives a shit anymore.

Sino ang makaka-relate sa mga discussions nila about the two directors? Mga film maker na matatanda. Eh di sila-sila lang din yun…

Labo, pare… 90’s!!! Sina Brocka and Bernal? Hello?!? 70’s and 80’s!!!

Dapat lang, piliin nila ang the best scripts, and the best directors (na bagay dun sa tema ng script) and the best crew. Sina R.A. Rivera, Quark Henares, Mario Cornejo, Marie Jamora, etc etc etc…New Blood, hindi FACE LIFT.

Prepaid VS. Line

Sunday, July 10th, 2005

As of today, may P50 pa ako na load, so not bad na yun. I have more control. I was supposed to change it to GFlex, pero hindi ko na rin naasikaso.

MTV Ink Q&A

1 who’s your favorite musician of all time?

Paul McCartney. To quote something i read in a magazine, "If he fell on the piano, by the time he picked himself up, he would have written three songs!"
Locally, i’d have to say Ryan Cayabyab and Cynthia Alexander.

2 who’s your least favorite? and why?

Honestly, i respect all musicians. Kahit na baduy, or rip-offs, or posers. It’s very hard to be a musician. But having said that, i’ve never ever liked Pearl Jam.

3 what’s your favorite album? and why?

Contagion 2! (hehehe joke lang!) … Abbey Road - the Beatles… Kahit na ngayon lang inilabas yung album na yan, it’d still be a hit album. Ganun kaganda yung mga kanta. Classic.

4 what’s the best song if you’re going to make ligaw?

"If I Ain’t Got You" by Alicia Keys

5 what song would you play if you want to seduce
someone?

"Tired Of Sex" by Weezer

6 what’s the best song when taking a dump?

Any song by Portishead. Relaxing… I can stay in the toilet all day long if may "soundtrack" na Portishead.

7 what’s the most baduy song for you?

Any song by Lito Camo. But i still respect him. He’s just doing it for the money. There’s nothing wrong with that.

8 what line/lyric from a song you wish you’ve written?
(example: ako yung sa N.E.R.D. "her ass is a
spaceship, i want to ride")

"Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans…" by John Lennon.
"And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make" - Paul McCartney
"God only knows what i’d be without you" - Brian Wilson

Here are some of the discarded questions:

1 what do you look for in a girl (or if you’re gay, boy)?

Nice eyes, cute face.

2 who is your first love and first kiss?

Meg Ryan.

3 boxers or briefs?

Briefs most of the time. It’s hard to jump around when you’re wearing boxers!

4 be stuck with the MILF or playboy bunny?

Bunnies are cute and fuzzy!

5 do you have mother issues?

My mom’s the best!

6 if you we’re a girl, would you fall in love with yourself?

I don’t think so. I’m a slob!

7 if you were a girl, who could have been your crush now?

  Johnny Depp
